Damian McCarthy is an Irish filmmaker based in Cork, my favorite city in the Republic (don’t tell my Dublin friends I said that). He has a small collection of short horror films, all viewable on YouTube or his website. His films are notable for being almost entirely sans dialogue, and relying on heavy atmosphere and slow buildup to a single climactic scare/laugh (they’re all pretty humorous).
Probably the most well-known of McCarthy’s shorts is He Dies at the End (not to be confused with John Dies at the End), a bizarre but characteristically entertaining blend of horror and humor.
Hungry Hickory is another of his offerings with a similar formula, but with a number of little funny bits on the way to the last scare. Enjoy.
That first scare! My heart just stopped. I love horror.
Right? Jump scares aren’t my favorite thing generally, but he does a good job.
